I wrote this song during a pretty desperate point in my life. I was busking (ie playing on the street) to try and keep myself fed and sheltered. Some folks really dig busking, I am not one of them. In fact, without a stage I'm actually really shy and don't like drawing too much attention to myself most of the time. Just focus on the songs, folk, pay no attention to the girl singing them. Any how, back to the story. I was playing Cat Steven's song "The First Cut (is the deepest)" over and over again and I thought to myself DAMN THIS IS THE MOST DEPRESSING THING EVER. What about those of us on our fifth or sixth cut? Huh? What about those of us who just take a really long time to find love? And so this song was born. Like most of my songs, the meaning changes subtly as I get older and now a song that was once about love has become about performing. Getting on stage, I come humbly and imperfectly.
